Mexican Sour Gherkin

$399
The Mexican Sour Gherkin is a unique open-pollinated heirloom variety of cucumber that is an absolute blast to grow. Also known as cucamelons, these tiny 1″ fruits resemble small watermelons but have a fresh cucumber taste with a hint of tangy lemon. This variety doesn’t tend to be a particularly heavy producer at first but will steadily produce throughout the season and greatly benefits from trellising. The Mexican Sour Gherkin makes a good candidate for pickling or eating fresh but be sure to harvest as soon as they reach the desired size to prevent the fruits from becoming too seedy. Melothria scabra. 67 Days to Maturity.

Treatment: Untreated

Cucumbers perform best when direct-seeded. They do not perform as well when transplanted. Cucumbers may be direct-seeded by hand or with a walk-behind seeder. To obtain a good stand of plants, we suggest planting Seeds every 6-8″ inches and thinning to one seed per foot.
Cucumbers are a vining plant and grow best when given a trellised structure to climb. Use a strong trellis that is well-supported with deeply driven stakes. Keeping plants off the ground will reduce the potential of plant diseases like mildews and other diseases that can result from excess plant moisture.
Trellising will also keep the fruits cleaner and save time with harvesting and processing. It will also help to prevent fruit discoloration or yellowing from sitting on the soil surface. Our Hortonova Trellis Netting works great for trellising cucumbers and is easy to install.

Super cool

I had excellent germination. I direct seeded and planted them heavily, expecting low germination. I don’t know if it was %100, but I had to go back and thin them.

Nothing

Was so excited about trying the Mexican Sour Gherkins, sadly we had ZERO germination. We are by no means professional gardeners but we do pretty good for ourselves with all that we grow. So disappointed in these, while every other variety of cucumber we planted came up 100%.
