Description
Vermiculite is a naturally-occurring component used as a soil amendment and in its natural form looks a lot like mica, with a layered rock appearance. It is mined in various regions throughout the world. With incredible water-retention properties, will reduce the need to water as frequently; it also improves moisture and nutrient retention. Each bag contains 8 quarts of vermiculite. OMRI certified.
Vermiculite can be used to make your own seed starting mix or as a top dressing in seed starting trays. It could also be used to lightly cover Seeds in seed starting trays. First, make an impression in the seed starting mix and place a seed in each impression. Next, use vermiculite to lightly dust or cover the Seeds. This technique has several benefits. For instance, it will prevent the growth of algae on the surface of the seed starting mix, it will reduce or eliminate the presence of fungus gnats which can harm seedlings. It will also keep the Seeds from being too wet during the germination process. Vermiculite is an excellent addition to pots of soil, whether that be in outdoor containers or in houseplants. Mixing some vermiculite into your potting soil will improve aeration and moisture retention, resulting in a healthier root system that is better able to spread out and absorb nutrients.
It can also be used in the propagation of fruit trees and other perennials. We especially like to use it when propagating fig cuttings. After filling the propagation pot with potting soil, add 1/2" on top to provide the same benefits listed above.
