Description

Be sure to check out our Lettuce Growing Guide to learn more about how to successfully grow lettuce.

Starfighter is an improved head lettuce variety with compact, dense heads. This variety is noted for its outstanding disease and aphid-resistant qualities. Heads are well-formed with shiny green leaves that are slightly savoyed. The savoyed or incised leaves have more surface area per leaf than flat leaf lettuce, and will provide a better crunch or dressing absorption when prepared. The medium-sized, dense heads are compact at maturity and easy to harvest. Starfighter Lettuce is heat-tolerant will grow well into late spring without bolting. This slow-bolting nature also allows for longer harvesting windows as it holds well in the field. Starfighter stores well and is easy to prepare once harvested. Once the core is removed from the head, there is minimal preparation required as leaf size is ideal for salads, sandwiches and more.

Starfighter Lettuce performs best when transplanted. Transplanting allows for more consistent plant spacing and prevents seedlings from competing with weeds in the early stages of the plant. We recommend starting transplants 3-4 weeks before the desired outdoor planting date. These Seeds are pelleted for easy singulation when planting in seed trays. Starfighter transplants grow great in our heavy-duty seed starting trays, where they develop a solid root ball with roots that are trained to grow downward. Lettuce transplants will need adequate fertilization once seedlings form the first set of true leaves. We recommend injecting 20-20-20 through the seedling watering system at least once a week to ensure plants are sufficiently fed. This can be done easily with our Brass Siphon Mixer and a five gallon bucket. Plants are ready to go in the ground when they can be easily pulled from the cells in the seed starting tray.
