Scarlet Nantes Carrot is a Nantes-type carrot with broad shoulders and blunt ends. It has a cylindrical shape with very little tapering from top to bottom. This makes it a great carrot for slicing as it provides even pieces throughout the entire carrot. Scarlet Nantes produces consistently-sized, 6" carrots at full maturity, but it is also a favorite variety for small or baby carrot production. These carrots have a crisp texture and sweet flavor that make them great for raw or cooked preparations. This variety is well-adapted and performs nicely in a wide variety of soil types, including harder, clay soils. It has strong tops that make for easy harvesting by hand. Scarlet Nantes Carrot holds great in the field, allowing for a longer harvesting window. When grown in the fall, they may be left in the ground and harvested as needed throughout the entire winter.
Carrots grow best when planted during the cooler times of the year in early spring or fall. Carrots prefer a soil temperature around 75 degrees for optimal germination. They will perform best when direct seeded and are not a good crop to transplant. We recommend seeding carrots in a thick band along the desired row. This will ensure a solid stand of carrots and help to aid in weed control once tops get larger. Carrots are a great crop for double-row planting on drip irrigation. For this strategy, plant two rows 6″ apart, skip about 3′, then plant another two rows 6″ apart. The double row technique allows for easy weed control because the tops shade the area between the double rows. It also allows you to maximize the garden space because you can get two rows of harvest for almost the same amount of space as one row.
