Be sure to check out our Cow Pea Growing Guide for more tips & tricks on successfully growing cow peas in your garden.

Sa Dandy Cream Pea is a southern favorite known for its ability to withstand hot and humid climates. It has a similar flavor to Zipper Cream Pea or Texas Cream 40 pea, but with smaller Seeds. Sa Dandy Cream Pea produces plentiful, light-colored pods of small white peas that melt in your mouth. Plants have a bush growing habit and perform well in a wide variety of growing conditions, making them relatively drought and heat-tolerant. Sa Dandy Peas are easy to shell and are great for canning and preserving. They have a creamy texture and rich flavor that is unrivaled among the field pea varieties. Shelled peas may be pressure-canned in jars, or blanched and frozen in bags.

We recommend planting Sa Dandy Cream Pea using a walk-behind planter like our Hoss Garden Seeder. Due to their heat-tolerance, they can be planted in spring and throughout the warm growing season. They make a great fall crop as well. Use a #5 seed plate, but always check the hole size and modify if necessary. Allow 3-4′ of growing space for each row. Field peas, or “crowder peas”, do very well when planted on double rows. Plant two rows about 6″ apart, then skip over 3-4′ and plant another double row. This will allow you to maximize garden space and produce more vegetables per square foot of garden. Peas should be harvested when pods are full and shelling is easy. If the pods do not shell easily, they likely need to stay on the plant longer. Keep shelled peas dry until preserving or cooking. If kept dry, they will store in the fridge for several weeks.
