Be sure to check out our Beans Growing Guide for more tips & tricks on successfully growing beans.

Royal Burgundy Bean is a bright, beautiful and delicious bush bean variety. It performs well when grown in traditional rows, but will also produce well when grown in containers or raised beds. The bright purple beans make this variety easy to harvest as the burgundy pods pop on the green foliage background. Royal Burgundy Bean plants have a bush growing habit and plants average 15-20" tall. Pods are 5-6" long with a crisp and delicious flavor. Pods are green on the inside which makes a nice color contrast when snapped. This variety is widely-adapted and will perform well in cooler and warmer planting zones.

Beans should be planted in spring after the last frost has occurred. Beans will germinate best once soil temps have reached 65 F or higher. Optimal germination temperature is around 77 F. Seeds can require 8 to 16 days to germinate, depending on the soil temperature. For continual production, succession plant every couple of weeks throughout the spring and early summer. Plants will drop blooms or cease production in the heat of summer. Subsequent succession plantings may be made in late summer/fall, as long as enough time is permitted before the first frost date.

Direct seeding is recommended. We suggest using a #6 plate on the Hoss Garden Seeder and modifying the hole size (if necessary) to fit the seed size. Beans should be planted relatively thick along the row and thinned to the desired spacing. To maximize garden space, consider using a double-row spacing. For double-row spacing, rows may be planted as close as 6" apart with 3' spacing between double rows. For single row spacing, 2' to 3' spacing is recommended.

Royal Burgundy Beans

These beans sprout so easily and so well that I stopped placing 2 beans per hole and now drop only 1. Big beautiful lush plants every time. My wife loves how easy she can spot these beans when picking and is amazed when they turn green when cooking - just like traditional green beans. HOSS is an amazing American business ran by a wonderful and trusted family that produces quality products. I won’t buy these from anywhere but HOSS.

Tried these very late in our growing season. Nearly every seed came up, was looking great 4 weeks into planting, bloomed beautiful purple flowers. Did my best to protect them from a early frost night, but wasn't enough. Excited to get these back in the ground next spring!
