To plant asparagus crowns, choose a sunny spot with well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. Dig a trench 6–8 inches deep and 12 inches wide, spacing crowns 12–18 inches apart. Spread the roots over small mounds of soil in the trench, ensuring the crowns sit 2 inches below the surface, and lightly cover them with soil. Water thoroughly and gradually fill the trench as the plants grow. Apply mulch to retain moisture and fertilize each spring. Avoid harvesting the first year to let the plants establish, ensuring years of productive harvests.
