Cosmos Bright Lights Mix is an open-pollinated mix of scarlet, orange and yellow blooms that are great for attracting butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects. Plants grow to 36" tall and do well when planted densely for thick foliage and ground cover. Plants produce semi-double blooms that have a 2-3" diameter. Cosmos Bright Lights Mix is widely-adapted and performs well in a wide range of climates and soil types. It will even grow well in relatively poor soils. It tolerates the heat and humidity well and is relatively drought-tolerant. The long stems make this a great variety for cut flower production. Cosmos Bright Lights also works great as a wildflower variety planted in large plots for beautiful landscapes. For this application, cultivate the soil, scatter the seed, and rake lightly.
We recommend transplanting Cosmos Bright Lights Mix for best results. This flower variety grows great in our heavy-duty seed starting trays with Pro-Mix Organic Seed Starting Mix. Place 1-2 seeds per cell and dust lightly with finely-ground seed starting mix. Once seedlings emerge, thin to one seed per cell. Transplants may be started a few weeks before the last frost date in spring, but can also be grown anytime throughout the warmer months. Transplants are ready to go in the ground when they can be easily pulled from the seed trays. Plants should be placed in the ground after the last frost date in spring or anytime during the spring, summer or early fall growing periods. Cosmos is a warm-weather flower that performs throughout the warmer months. For best results, prune or cut flowers as they bloom. This will ensure the production of continuous blooms throughout the growing season.
