Description

Chef's Choice Orange Tomato is a hybrid, indeterminate variety that provides heirloom flavor with hybrid production and disease-resistance. A 2013 All-America Selection, Chef's Choice Orange produces large, bright orange tomatoes that average 12 ounces but can easily reach 1 lb. This variety matures earlier than most orange tomato varieties and is resistant to cracking. This large slicing tomato has a bright orange interior that is meaty with few Seeds. The color remains in tact throughout the cooking process, making this a great tomato for making sauces and soups. Chef's Choice Orange Tomato has a low acid content and is exceptionally sweet. Plants grow to 5' tall and produce dense foliage to protect fruits as they mature.

 

Growing Information

Tomatoes are in the nightshade family along with peppers and eggplant. Plants in the nightshade family are susceptible to blossom end rot, which is a result of a calcium deficiency. To prevent or alleviate this problem, apply pelleted gypsum at the base of the plant at bloom set. Tomatoes do best when transplanted, as the germination time can be longer than most vegetable seed. They grow very well in our heavy-duty seed starting trays. Plants should be started 4-6 weeks before the intended outdoor planting date.

If conditions outside are favorable, transplants may be planted directly from our 162 cell trays. If conditions are still too cold for planting tomatoes, transplants may be "stepped-up" to 4" pots to allow more room to grow. Tomatoes can produce heavy fruits and will require some form of support to keep the plant upright. This ensures that plants and fruits stay off the ground, reducing the possibility of disease and keeping fruits clean.

Survived Texas Summer

The flavor of this tomato was very good. The texture was meaty with few seeds.

At the beginning of the year this tomato did well, but in the summer when the other tomatoes just stopped, this plant survived and grew over the hot summer months and then started to set fruit in the fall, right up until frost.

I'm growing this one again.
