Be sure to check out our Lettuce Growing Guide to learn more about how to successfully grow lettuce.
Butter Crunch Lettuce is a proven variety that was an All-America Selections winner in 1963. It produces dense heads with a rich, green exterior and creamy, white interior. Leaves have a smooth, buttery taste that is great for salads, wraps, tacos and many other preparations. Butter Crunch lettuce is extremely nutritious and rich in Vitamin A. Heads are soft and well-formed and are best consumed soon after harvest. If kept dry, they can be stored up to a week in cold storage. Butter Crunch retains a milder flavor longer in the field and is less prone to get bitter as heads get larger. It exhibits a moderate heat-tolerance that allows it to hold in the field in late spring without bolting.
Butter Crunch Lettuce performs best when transplanted. Transplanting allows for more consistent plant spacing and prevents seedlings from competing with weeds in the early stages of the plant. We recommend starting transplants 3-4 weeks before the desired outdoor planting date. Thin plants to one seed per cell to ensure adequate growing space. Butter Crunch transplants grow great in our heavy-duty seed starting trays, where they develop a solid root ball with roots that are trained to grow downward. Lettuce transplants will need adequate fertilization once seedlings form the first set of true leaves. We recommend injecting 20-20-2o through the seedling watering system at least once a week to ensure plants are sufficiently fed. This can be done easily with our Brass Siphon Mixer and a five gallon bucket. Plants are ready to go in the ground when they can be easily pulled from the cells in the seed starting tray.
