Description

Beit Alpha Cucumber is an heirloom, open-pollinated cucumber variety that is parthenocarpic, meaning it doesn't require pollinators. This makes it a great variety for growing in greenhouses or urban areas where pollinator presence may be reduced. Because they are parthenocarpic, the fruits have very few, if any, Seeds. Beit Alpha Cucumbers are nearly spineless and great for eating right off the fine. The cucumbers have a mild flavor and are best picked smaller than a traditional, American slicing variety.

Growing Information

Cucumbers can be direct-seeded or transplanted, although we recommend direct-seeding. Cucumbers may be direct-seeded by hand or with a walk-behind seeder. To obtain a good stand of plants, we suggest planting seeds every 6-8" inches and thinning to one seed per foot.

Cucumbers are a vining plant and grow best when given a trellised structure to climb. Use a strong trellis that is well-supported with deeply driven stakes. Keeping plants off the ground will reduce the potential of plant diseases like mildews and other diseases that can result from excess plant moisture.

Cucumbers can be susceptible a wide variety of plant diseases, especially downy mildew and powdery mildew. If you commonly have issues with these plant disease, we recommend starting a preventative, organic spraying program when the plants are small. Our Liquid Copper Fungicide or Complete Disease Control are great options to ensure your plants remain healthy throughout the entire harvesting window.

Trellising will also keep the fruits cleaner and save time with harvesting and processing. It will also help to prevent fruit discoloration or yellowing from sitting on the soil surface. Our Hortonova Trellis Netting works great for trellising cucumbers and is easy to install.

Going great so far....

The package was received early - thank you very much!
The seeds were plentiful, and have already broken ground (planted 9/16/24). All look healthy - it will be a bit longer until we get to harvest, but they are all I had hoped for so far.

Good Cucumber

I usually am content with Straight 8 and Boston Pickling, but my wife ordered a pack of these last year. I think I only planted one to try, but had a good flavor by itself or in salads. Planted three this year along with the other two varieties and they produced better this year. We've eaten a lot and given away a bunch. I prefer Straight 8 for cucumber salad (sour cream version), but would say I will take these for any other kind of fresh eating, like in a side salad or cutup with cherry tomatoes and basil. They are perfect for that, since they stay firmer in the fridge after being cut and don't get soggy.

These cucumbers were awesome! The taste was amazing and I had no pest issues. I had a friend who sells produce for a living say it was the best tasting cucumber he ever had. Mine did have prickly skin and seeds so I don’t know if I picked too soon or too late. Had a few with no prickles
