Description

Be sure to check out our Lettuce Growing Guide to learn more about how to successfully grow lettuce.

Skyphos Butterhead Lettuce is an open-pollinated variety that produces large, well-formed heads of crisp, delicious lettuce. This variety is very adaptable and performs well in a wide-range of planting zones. It is also slow-bolting which makes it a great variety into late spring. This butterhead lettuce has an excellent disease-resistance package that includes resistance to downy mildew and lettuce mosaic virus. Heads have a dark red exterior with a green interior. Heads will display more red coloration in cooler growing conditions and display more green coloration in warmer growing conditions. Skyphos Butterhead Lettuce has an amazing texture and flavor that works great for salads or lettuce wraps. Pair with green butterhead lettuce for an eye-catching presentation.

Skyphos Butterhead Lettuce performs best when transplanted. Transplanting allows for more consistent plant spacing and prevents seedlings from competing with weeds in the early stages of the plant. We recommend starting transplants 3-4 weeks before the desired outdoor planting date. These Seeds are pelleted for easy singulation when planting in seed trays. Skyphos Butterhead transplants grow great in our heavy-duty seed starting trays, where they develop a solid root ball with roots that are trained to grow downward. Lettuce transplants will need adequate fertilization once seedlings form the first set of true leaves. We recommend injecting 20-20-20 through the seedling watering system at least once a week to ensure plants are sufficiently fed. This can be done easily with our Brass Siphon Mixer and a five gallon bucket. Plants are ready to go in the ground when they can be easily pulled from the cells in the seed starting tray.
