Description
Ruby Fresh Baby Swiss Chard is a hybrid Swiss chard variety specifically designed for baby leaf production. Ruby Fresh produces leaves with bright red stems and well-defined veins. Leaves have a medium to dark green color and a round to oval shape. Leaves are thick and nutritious, packed with anthocyanins and fiber. This is a great variety to use in baby leaf salad mixes or spring mixes. It can be in combination with other baby leaf varieties or it can stand alone as a great baby leaf green.
Ruby Fresh Baby Swiss Chard should be direct-seeded densely in a bed. Bed size will depend on personal preference, but usually bed size ranges between 2′ and 3′ wide. We recommend planting with our Hoss Garden Seeder using a modified #1 seed plate. Drill 8 more holes in the #1 plate to make 16 holes, which will plant densely at a 1″ spacing. Seeds may also be hand-scattered and raked into the soil. Either way, keep beds adequately watered for the first week to ensure adequate germination.
Ruby Fresh Baby Swiss Chard has an upright growing habit which makes it easy to harvest. Harvest with a sharp knife once leaves have grown to the desired size. If a milder flavor is preferred, harvest when leaves are smaller. If a bolder, zestier flavor is preferred, allow leaves to grow larger before harvest. New leaves will continue to emerge for repeat harvests throughout the growing season. With any cut and come again type greens crop, you can usually get 3-4 harvests, sometimes more, from a single bed of baby Swiss chard.
