Description

The Natchez Blackberry is a standout variety prized for its early ripening, thornless canes, and impressively large, sweet berries. Developed by the University of Arkansas, Natchez is one of the first blackberry varieties to fruit in the season, making it a favorite among home gardeners eager to enjoy fresh berries as early as late spring in the South.

This variety produces long, glossy black fruits with a mild, sweet flavor and excellent firmness, making them perfect for fresh eating, baking, freezing, or making jams. The upright, semi-erect growth habit makes it easier to manage than fully trailing types, and its thornless canes make harvesting painless. Natchez is a high-yielding plant, producing consistent harvests over a 3 to 4 week period with proper care.

Growing Information

Natchez Blackberry is a self-pollinating, vigorous grower that spreads through root suckers, sending up new canes to increase productivity year after year. Regular annual pruning is essential for maximizing fruit production and maintaining plant health. You can remove dead or crossed branches anytime to promote airflow and new growth, but the main pruning should be done in late winter, cutting back the previous year’s fruiting canes to make room for fresh growth.

This variety is known for its adaptability and thrives in a wide range of growing conditions. For optimal results, plant in full sun with well-draining soil. Natchez is both drought-tolerant and heat-loving, making it ideal for southern climates, but it also shows excellent cold hardiness in cooler zones.
