  • Hoss Garden Seeder: durable and versatile walk-behind garden planter.
  • Innovative seed plate design for customizable planting.
  • Makes planting easy and efficient.
  • USA Made!
Description

The Hoss Garden Seeder allows you to easily plant your vegetable garden with accuracy and precision. Our innovative seed plate design allows you to easily customize seed plates to fit the variety of seed you're planting. Seed plates lie flat in the hopper and can be easily changed without wasting excess seed.

The Hoss Garden Seeder has a rolling coulter or rolling disk that opens a furrow for the dropping seed. This double disk furrow opener works great in soils that have heavy organic residue from prior vegetable or cover crops. Once the seed drops into the planting furrow, the drag chain covers the seed and the rear wheel packs the soil to ensure optimal germination.

The Hoss Garden Seeder is constructed with Amish-crafted hardwood handles, 15″ steel wheels, and a powder-coated steel frame. The handles are adjustable to the users height. The steel frame ensures the unit is stable and easy to push in a straight line along the row.

Hoss Garden Seeder features:

  • Removable hopper for filling and emptying seed
  • Adjustable planting depth from 1/4″ – 1 1/2″
  • Stand-alone design with back kickstand
  • Plant small to large Seeds with accuracy and precision

Good Seeder

I've had this seeder about three years and figure it deserves more reviews than are here. This is the first year I have used it for 100% of my stuff planted from seed. I have used it a lot to run narrow 12" rows of iron and clay peas to keep weeds down until I'm ready to plant something else. My seed goes a long way with this seeder compared to just sowing it.

I'm usually in a hurry and trying to beat rain with everything else and didn't have time to play with seed plates and getting it right, but this year has been dry until the last week, so I gave it a shot. I still didn't worry too much about instructions and just went with the suggested plates.

What I like;
-It is heavy enough to keep the wheel turning without being so heavy to wear you out.
-I use a tiller on the tractor first, but still have old cornstalks, turned under clover and other debris. The rolling coulter will go over this with no problem and doesn't accumulate and drag like making a furrow with a wheel hoe. This also makes it easier to just drive to a stob at the end of the row and keep straight without marking rows.
-Changing the seed plates is easy.
-Seed plate material is easily modified, plus seed plate blanks are available to customize.
-Duct tape over seed plate holes is a lot simpler than changing sprockets for spacing.
-I spent a lot less time and effort planting this year.

The instructions say it is impossible to design plates to work perfectly for all varieties and seed size variation. I agree and most improvements I could think of would probably add more cost and complexity than they are worth.

I do have one complaint that most folks won't have, which I think can be corrected with minimal cost. My mama would be 100 this month, if still living, and always wanted Fordhook beans. I still feel obligated to plant some. These seeds have a lot greater variation from biggest to smallest than most beans. I drilled out a seed plate to 7/8", which seemed to be about right to handle the largest in the bag of seeds from Hoss. I took off and went to planting. What I did not check was that the drop tube ID was smaller than 7/8" and probably close to 5/8. My biggest seed still would not go through and hung in the top of the tub, but since my seed plate hole was bigger the smallest seed would also hang in the tube with two side by side. A bigger tube ID would take care of it.

Just made my life easier, especially for a 75 year old, I wish I had found this years ago, thanks HOSS!

Planter

Hoss planter plants much more uniform than my other brand planter. So far I really like it well built. I have yet to use large seeds but does well with small seed.

Too late to try it much

A big learning curve compared to my old seeder. The ground must be soft and flat or it will not seed correctly. I have seeded black eye peas and recently 4 more rows of corn. The number on the disc is close but some seeds are just the wrong size. You may get more seeds than you planned for. Quality is the best. The depth needs to have markings on it to tell how deep you are going. Locked up once with corn. I am glad I can play with it before crunch time in the spring. Still Thebes seeder going. I would like to review again in the spring after the big seeding takes place.
