Description

Alabama Black Eye Beans are a heirloom lima saved for generations in Alabama. This variations can be used as a dry bean, green shell bean or as a butterbean. Although, technically a lima bean it is often referred to as a butterbean. Alabama Black Eye Beans require a strong trellis because the vines grow vigorously and tall. It is especially productive during hot summers.  Tolerates droughts well. 

Growing Information

Our Hortonova Trellis Netting works great for trellising pole beans. Unlike bush beans which will stop producing after several harvests, pole beans will grow from spring until the first frost in fall or winter. During the heat of summer, beans may stop production and drop blooms. But production will resume once temperatures begin to cool in early fall.

Beans should be planted in spring after the last frost has occurred. Beans will germinate best once soil temps have reached 65 F or higher. The optimal germination temperature is around 77 F. Seeds can require 8 to 16 days to germinate, depending on the soil temperature. Direct seeding is recommended. Beans should be planted relatively thick along the row and thinned to the desired spacing. Consider planting pole beans on both sides of the trellis to maximize the potential of the trellised area.

Best yield, germinated fast, easy to grow, bees love them. Very delicious when cooked. Were still going strong in October and November in Altha Florida.

TONS of beans!

My first year growing this here on the Texas Gulf Coast, Zone 9.
Our summers are a combination of triple-digit temps, drought, and high humidity. These beans were creepers at first. Then they sprung to life putting out miles of vines....and then came the little flowers, and suddenly, voila! TONS of beans. I harvested them when 'plump' green to cook as butterbeans (YUM!). I also let quite a few dry & turn tan on the vine to store as dry beans. They are STILL going strong even into October! I will definitely plant these as a summer staple.
