Description
Sun Angel Spinach is a hybrid variety with exceptional heat-tolerance and disease resistance. As opposed to FanTail, which has an oval leaf, this variety produces a round leaf with a smooth surface. It has a dark green color that is visually appealing and is especially suited for salads and other raw preparations. Sun Angel Spinach grows great when planted densely in beds. This is a great variety to plant in a 2-3' wide bed or in an entire raised bed. This is a cut-and-come-again type crop that can be harvested several times throughout the growing season. Harvest with a sharp knife by cutting the leaves while leaving the root structure intact.
Sun Angel Spinach may be direct-seeded or transplanted. Transplanting allows for more consistent plant spacing and prevents seedlings from competing with weeds in the early stages of the plant. We recommend starting transplants 3-4 weeks before the desired outdoor planting date. Spinach transplants grow great in our heavy-duty seed starting trays, where they develop a solid root ball with roots that are trained to grow downward. Plants are ready to go in the ground when they can be easily pulled from the cells in the seed starting tray. For direct-seeding, we suggest using the #2 seed plate with our Hoss Garden Seeder. It is important to always check the hole size to make sure the Seeds can freely flow through the holes. If necessary, drill the holes slightly larger to accommodate the seed. When direct seeding, we suggest planting a dense bed so that any weed growth is shaded once plants get larger.
