Be sure to check out our Lettuce Growing Guide to learn more about how to successfully grow lettuce.

Parris Island Romaine is an heirloom variety that was named after a town on the coast of South Carolina. This romaine lettuce has been the go-to variety for market farmers and backyard gardeners for over 50 years. It is a perfect variety for baby-leaf harvests, but also produces heavy, upright heads that can get as tall as 12". Parris Island has dark green leaves with dense hearts that make it the idea choice for caesar salads and other raw preparations. It can be cut into pieces for a traditional caesar salad, or cut in halves for an excellent wedge salad. Heads are crisp and sweet with a slightly savoyed appearance. Parris Island exhibits a moderate bolt-resistant, which allows it to be grown further into late spring than other varieties.

Parris Island Romaine performs best when transplanted. Transplanting allows for more consistent plant spacing and prevents seedlings from competing with weeds in the early stages of the plant. We recommend starting transplants 3-4 weeks before the desired outdoor planting date. Thin plants to one seed per cell to ensure adequate growing space. Romaine lettuce transplants grow great in our heavy-duty seed starting trays, where they develop a solid root ball with roots that are trained to grow downward. Lettuce transplants will need adequate fertilization once seedlings form the first set of true leaves. We recommend injecting 20-20-2o through the seedling watering system at least once a week to ensure plants are sufficiently fed. This can be done easily with our Brass Siphon Mixer and a five gallon bucket. Plants are ready to go in the ground when they can be easily pulled from the cells in the seed starting tray.

I bought my first bedding plant & let it go to seed. This spring when l was clearing the weeds l had a full crop of my Parris Island #606 lettuce. I was amazed. It even grew in our hard gumbo soil along side of my planters. Wow!
