Be sure to check out our Watermelon Growing Guide for more tips & tricks on successfully growing watermelons at home.

Yellow Doll Watermelon is a hybrid watermelon with a unique and beautiful, bright yellow flesh. These melons have small Seeds with a great, sweet taste. This watermelon variety is classified as an "icebox" type, which simply means it is small enough to fit inside the fridge. Yellow Doll Watermelon has an early maturity date, but should be harvested as soon as it is ready to prevent splitting in the field. Fruits average 6 to 10 lbs and have dark green stripes with a delicious, bright yellow flesh. Plants are relatively compact which means this is a great variety for growing in gardens with limited space. The vines are semi-compact and will produce fruits early which would be great for northern climates.

Watermelons may be direct seeded or transplanted. For direct seeding, we recommend planting Seeds every 12" along the intended row to ensure a good stand. Once plants emerge, thin plants to one every 2 feet. Watermelons can be susceptible to plant diseases if excess leaf moisture is present. As a result, we recommend using drip irrigation on watermelons to reduce leaf moisture and feed plants more effectively. During periods of heavy rainfall, using a fungicide like Liquid Copper can help to alleviate disease pressure as well.

Watermelons also perform well when transplanted. In early spring, we recommend transplanting to get a jump start on the growing season. Watermelon prefers warmer temperatures for seed to germinate. By transplanting, you can have plants in the ground before the soil temperature warms enough to direct seed. We recommend starting transplants 4-5 weeks before the desired outdoor planting date. Watermelon transplants grow great in our heavy-duty seed starting trays, where they develop a solid root ball with roots that are trained to grow downward. Plants are ready to go in the ground when they can be easily pulled from the cells in the seed starting tray. Watermelons are ready to harvest when the tendril near the fruit completely dries. The tendril can be found between the fruit stem and the fruit. It is usually curly and green but will dry when fruits are ready to harvest.

Haven’t grown watermelons in over 20 years. Decided to give Yellow Doll a whirl after seeing it mentioned a couple of times on the Row by Row show. Planted two Yellow Dolls along with two plants of another watermelon variety in a 4x8 raised bed. Germinated on April 28th and harvested the first Yellow Doll on July 9 (72 days). Most fruit are in the 9 to 10 pound range. Had a little downy mildew in June but quickly got it under control with a fungicide. Will have at least 11 Yellow Dolls on two plants barring additional fruit set. Fruit are delicious. Thin rind. Don’t let the color fool you. It tastes like watermelon.

The seed packet gives a description of “semi-compact vines” like the vines will be shorter. They were 12+ feet in multiple directions. Make sure to account for that.

Great, productive variety. Will grow again!

Very good

I had loads of these melons from a single 20’ row. Melons were very good, and personal sized. I ate one nearly everyday after work once they started getting ripe. Can’t wait to grow them again this year.

Amazing Yield

2 years into growing these lovely watermelons and I'm even more impressed than last year. The vines are absolutely loaded. They are easy to keep trimmed and controlled. The fruit is early and absolutely delicious. They also keep surprisingly long in refrigeration. All in all my favourite watermelon I've grown to date. I can't recommend them enough.
