Description

Ponca Blackberry sets a new standard for sweetness and flavor among thornless blackberry cultivars. With firm, medium-sized berries and remarkably low acidity, Ponca delivers a consistent, rich taste that stands out, even in rainy conditions. Developed by the University of Arkansas, Ponca is a fruiting, thornless variety with erect canes and a compact architecture, making it easier to manage and tip-prune.

Ripening early, Ponca offers a secondary bud crop, extending your harvest window by two to three weeks. Yields are impressive, averaging over 20,000 pounds per acre in research trials. The berries are not only sweet but also firm and aromatic, holding up well in storage with minimal red drupelet reversion.

Growing Information

Ponca Blackberry grows on erect, thornless canes and is well-suited for gardeners seeking an early harvest with minimal maintenance. Its shortened internodes improve primocane tipping and make the plant more compact and manageable. For best results, plant Ponca in full sun and well-drained soil. Space plants about 3 feet apart in rows 6 to 8 feet apart, and support with a trellis if desired for easier harvesting.

Ponca is highly disease-resistant, showing no signs of orange rust or anthracnose and only minimal cane or leaf rust during research trials. It is cold-hardy, withstanding temperatures down to 1°F, and performs well in regions where cultivars like Osage, Ouachita, and Natchez are grown.
