Description

Deer Tongue Amish Lettuce is an heirloom, open-pollinated variety that was a staple among Pioneer families. This hardy variety has elongated leaves, somewhat triangular in shape, that grow outward and upward. Deer Tongue Lettuce can be a single or multiple harvest crop. Mature plants will form loose heads for single cut harvests. Individual leaves may also be harvested to extend the harvest window. Deer Tongue Amish Lettuce has bright green leaves. Leaves have a crisp texture with a rich flavor. This is a great variety for salads or wraps. Plants are vigorous and heat-tolerant and will perform well in the late spring/early summer window.

Growing Information

Deer Tongue Amish Lettuce performs best when transplanted. Transplanting allows for more consistent plant spacing and prevents seedlings from competing with weeds in the early stages of the plant. We recommend starting transplants 3-4 weeks before the desired outdoor planting date. Thin plants to one seed per cell to ensure adequate growing space. Deer Tongue Lettuce transplants grow great in our heavy-duty seed starting trays, where they develop a solid root ball with roots that are trained to grow downward.

Lettuce transplants will need adequate fertilization once seedlings form the first set of true leaves. We recommend injecting 20-20-20 through the seedling watering system at least once a week to ensure plants are sufficiently fed. This can be done easily with our Brass Siphon Mixer and a five gallon bucket. Plants are ready to go in the ground when they can be easily pulled from the cells in the seed starting tray. To maximize garden space, plant lettuce on double rows with 8-12" between plants. Once the plants being to grow, they will shade the center between rows and help to reduce weed pressure.
