Description

Bright Lights Swiss Chard is a colorful blend of Swiss chard that is great for baby leaf or full leaf production. This variety includes an equal mix of gold, pink, orange, purple, red and white stems. The leaves also exhibit a wide color variation from green to many shades of orange, red and pink. Bright Lights Swiss Chard is an All American Selections winner and has superb bolt tolerance for extended harvests into the late spring/early summer months. It is also relatively cold-hardy and will continue producing through late fall/early winter. In our trials, Bright Lights has shown a remarkable resilience to insects and will not take damage when other plants typically do. Plants have slightly savoyed leaves and stems that are edible as well. Chard makes a great green for fresh salads, but also works well as a sautéed or stir-fried green.

Growing Information

Swiss Chard may be direct-seeded or transplanted, depending on the desired harvest. Direct seed if multi-color, baby leaf harvests are desired. If larger, full-size leaves are desired, we suggest transplanting. Transplanting allows for more consistent plant spacing and prevents seedlings from competing with weeds in the early stages of the plant. We recommend starting transplants 3-4 weeks before the desired outdoor planting date. Chard transplants grow great in our heavy-duty seed starting trays, where they develop a solid root ball with roots that are trained to grow downward. Plants are ready to go in the ground when they can be easily pulled from the cells in the seed starting tray. For harvests throughout the entire growing season, pull a few stems from each plant and leave a few so the plant can continue to photosynthesize and grow.
