Be sure to check out our Okra Growing Guide for more tips & tricks on successfully growing okra at home.

Clemson Spineless Okra is an open-pollinated okra variety that has been the standard for backyard gardeners and market farmers for many decades. This okra variety was an All-America Selections winner back in the 1930s and has been a favorite by many since. Productive plants produce pods that can reach 7-9" in length, but are best harvested between 3-4" long. Large plants will grow as large as 6' and taller in optimally-warm growing conditions. This is a great all-around variety for many cooking applications. It tastes great when used in soups and stews, but it also great for stewing, canning, frying, roasting, pickling and boiling.

Clemson Spineless Okra may be direct-seeded or transplanted. In early spring, we recommend transplanting to get a jump start on the growing season. Okra prefers warmer temperatures for seed to germinate. By transplanting, you can have plants in the ground before the soil temperature warms enough to direct seed. We recommend starting transplants 4-5 weeks before the desired outdoor planting date. Okra transplants grow great in our heavy-duty seed starting trays, where they develop a solid root ball with roots that are trained to grow downward. Plants are ready to go in the ground when they can be easily pulled from the cells in the seed starting tray.

For late spring and summer plantings, direct seeding is preferred. Clemson Spineless can be easily planted with a walk-behind planter like our Hoss Garden Seeder. We suggest succession planting okra throughout the warmer months. Once plants get tall, they may become less productive and harvesting will become more difficult. As a result, we recommend planting a crop of okra in spring, summer and again in fall.

This is the Market Variety!

The Clemson is the strongest and most consistent variety I have grown in Zone 9. The plants can reach 10+ feet tall and just produce and produce. But, you need to pick them almost every day or the pods reach 8 inches or longer and become tough and "woody". If you want to sell okra at market this is you go-to variety. The Stinkbugs will go after them, but the plant itself can deal with it. Planted over 200 plants in April and they are only slowing down in mid-September. I plant an addition 50 or so plants in late July/early August and these are beginning producing now and will probably go until mid-December. They love the sun, but as the days grow shorter the plants produce less. They love the heat! When the Florida sun is roasting other plants the Clemson will keep producing.
