Description
Ice Queen Zinnia is a bi-color zinnia with large, semi-double to double flower heads. Petals are rose-colored on the inside and fade to a light pink color towards the outside. This particular species is native to Mexico and performs well throughout the warm, summer months.
Ice Queen Zinnia has strong stems which hold the big blooms and keep them from breaking the stems. This is a perfect variety for cut flower production. Harvest flowers when blooms are just opening for best results. Remove the leaves on the stems below the bloom for optimal longevity. Blooms will keep for several weeks in with adequate water in a jar or vase.
Ice Queen Zinnia can be direct-seeded or transplanted. Due to the papery texture of the seed and the oblong seed size, zinnias do not plant well with a walk-behind planter. As a result, direct-seeding must be done by hand. To direct seed, create a small furrow in the soil and scatter the zinnia seed along the furrow. Use a garden rake to lightly cover the seed and pack the planted area. Zinnias grow well when planted on double rows with drip irrigation. Lay one row of drip tape and plant on both sides of the tape to maximize garden space.
Zinnias also perform well when transplanted. They grow great in our heavy-duty seed starting trays. Transplants are ready to go in the ground when plants can be easily pulled from the seed starting trays. Zinnias are very heat-tolerant and will continue to produce throughout the warm months of summer. To maximize production, prune or “dead-head” plants to promote the development of new blooms.
